Chondromalacia Patella

Chondromalacia Patella

It is also called as Patellofemoral pain syndrome.
It is an inflammation of the underside of the patella and softening of the cartilage.
The cartilage under the kneecap is a natural shock absorber, and overuse, injury, and many other factors can cause increased deterioration and breakdown of the cartilage. The cartilage is no longer smooth and therefore movement and use is very painful. While it often affects young individuals engaged in active sports, it also afflicts older adults who overwork their knees.

Symptoms are best characterized as a dull pain around the front of the knee joint, behind the kneecap. This pain is often worsened by going up or down stairs or sitting in one position for an extended amount of time, which often leaves knees feeling stiff. Chondromalacia can also cause a knee joint to “catch,” meaning it suddenly has difficulty moving past a certain point. It can also cause the knee to give out unexpectedly. These symptoms are more often associated with repeated knee bending in a short period of time.
